In one case there were three mounds in a close cluster, one old and abandoned, the other two occupied. Also, it was late afternoon, cold and with a light rain, and we were at an elevation where it had probably snowed the night before, yet the mounds all had dense layers of motionless or nearly motionless workers on the surfaces. One nest that was in an open area near treeline looked like it had a dense layer of dead ants. The ants were flattened and covered with droplets of water. Yet when I brushed them with my hand they began to move very slowly.",
