Next I found a cap of fine, white carton over a deep, 1cm dia. knothole. The hole contained several workers, and there was a ring of scale insects just inside of the knothole, on the walls (fig. in notes). On a nearby part of the trunk, 2m high, a protruding dead branch, 5-10cm dia, contained many workers. Later P. Ward found a column of foraging workers on ground, several meters from the legume tree. The column led to a small dead stump, which contained many workers. A clump of workers along the column was concentrated in an area of leaf litter where there was some white fluffy material. It looked like scale insect fluff, but I could find no scales. I think it was just a patch of fungal hyphae. These latter ants may or may not have been part of the colony in the tree.",
