The stick was in deep shade, under forest canopy. The nest contained 4 or 5 parasitized pupae. These are the dipteran parasitoids like I have seen before in P. unidentata at Corcovado. The cocoons are split down the sides to accomodate the globose fly puparia, creating an oriental lantern effect. I transported 4 pupae back to the U.S. I had removed the ant cocoon from one of the pupae; a fly emerged from this one on 15 August. I observed the remaining three on 19 Aug and discovered that all had pharate adults and loose portions of the pupal shell from which to exit, but that they had all been trapped inside by the ant cocoon, and had expired. The one that did emerge failed to expand its wings.",
