On each branch sampled, the outside of the branch and the foliage was occupied by a black Solenopsis. Azteca would only come out as leaves were cut off and the branch was cut into. The branches were all occupied by caterpillars of a riodinid (Theope af. decorata G&S, P. DeVries pers. comm., 6 Jul 89). The caterpillars were always tended by the Solenopsis. Young larvae were deep within the sinuses formed on the ventral surface of the leaf where the primary veins converged at the petiole. Often there was a silked pocket and a partial roof of superficial and feeble carton. On branch tips, every leaf except the very newest and oldest had larvae, commonly 2-3 per leaf. Leaves with larvae exhibited a type of herbivory which is probably attributable to the riodinid larvae. The region near the petiolar insertion was shot full of small holes and skeletonized spots, while the outer parts of the leaf, out on the lobes, lacked this damage. On older leaves, a transparent region was evident near the petiole. I could look up at the crown and see that all leaves of a tree were suffering this damage. On the shoot tip itself, clusters of larger larvae and pupae were found under the dead stipules. These regions were densely occupied by Solenopsis. Photos. Branches from the first four trees contained alate queens of A. ovaticeps. The branch from the fifth tree was irregularly occupied. Blocks of internodes had never been entered. Several non-contiguous blocks of internodes contained a small number of ovaticeps workers and males. A few internodes contained a Pheidole colony. On leaves of today's samples of ovaticeps-inhabited trees there was abundant fauna. The leaves were crawling with caterpillars, other species of ants, and many heteroptera, some spiders. In contrast, a xanthochroa-inhabited tree (#2441) had leaves that were strikingly devoid of activity. They were clean. See field notes for additional data.",
