This tree has been referred to before [JTL29May82/1530] with respect to its seedlings. The canopy newgrowth is very like the seedling shoots, with stipules with food bodies and nectaries on the leaves. At the very top of the tree the branching pattern results in very flat layers of leaves (figure in notes, photos). There is a giant Clusia hemiepiphyte which covers half of the upper crown. This species of Clusia does not appear in Croat; it has small, elliptic leaves. Also in the tree is a fairly large plant of the typical, broad-leaved Clusia. In the uppermost crown area, a small Azteca species lived in chambers in the center of nearly every branch tip I could reach. The chambers looked chewed out by Azteca, not a natural feature of the plant. The chambers have many pink coccids on the walls, and some chambers have brood. The branches show a history of newgrowth flushes. Chambers in the latest flush are most active; chambers in older or dead stems are abandoned or have few workers. The chambers in sequential shoots are usually not connected (figure in notes). All the chambers were connected externally by an extensive system of galleries, made of a black, very crusty carton.",
