Steep, highly eroded, ± barren, ± NE-facing “badlands” of Orella Member of the Tertiary Brule Formation, with coarse-grained, calcareous sandstone cropping out on slopes above Big Cottonwood Creek; sage (Artemisia tridentata, Artemisia cana) steppe on ridgetops, with open areas dominated by Bouteloua spp., Buchloë dactyloides and Carex filifolia; plain below slopes mostly grazed pastureland, comprising a matrix of weedy areas dominated by non-native species, Hesperostipa comata-Nassella viridula-Pascopryum smithii mixed-grass prairie with occasional Artemisia spp., Ericameria nauseosa and Rhus trilobata and scattered large, flat-topped, non-calcareous sandstone boulders, and shallow, seasonally wet depressions with Buchloë and Pascopyrum, with small, several-stemmed Populus deltoides and Salix exigua scattered along washes. Soil clayey.",
