"dwc:fieldNotes": "NOTEBY J. Longino, NOTEDATE 16-Feb-03: JTL4936: Stenamma. I think this is the same colony as JTL4918. I returned to this site this morning. The excavation hole was empty, with no sign of Stenamma and no new excavation. However, I noticed an identical nest entrance about 20cm away on the clay bank. I excavated this nest and found, just behind and beneath the pebble dome, a flat chamber about 20mm across. This chamber contained abundant workers, brood, at least one adult male, and a dealate queen. I collected the entire colony and will quantify nest contents later. I found no other tunnel leading further from this one chamber. This observation was in strong contrast to the previous two nests I excavated, both of which had identical superstructure and one or two flat chambers, but only a few workers and no brood or queen. One possibility is that colonies of this species keep more than one nest, such that when raided by army ants or other enemies they have another nest ready to occupy. This is similar to the findings of Terry McGlynn for Aphaenogaster araneoides in La Selva. He has found that colonies have multiple nests, many of which are empty, and they move from nest to nest. Photos. Later examination of nest contents: 117 adult workers, 1 dealate queen, 1 adult male, 35 worker pupae, 30 large larvae, a similar amount of small brood and eggs. There was also a beetle with the collection, but I do not know if this was in amongst the nest as an inquiline or a contaminant.",
