Stem segments obovate with round apex becoming oblong and pointed with age, to 30-35 cm x 8-10 cm x less than 1 cm thick, pale green with glabrous epidermis; areoles eliptic, 4 mm long x 3 mm wide, set on side of prominent tubercles; areoles with white wool turning gray and glochids 3-4 mm long forming a brush at upper part of areole, readily caduceous; spines 2-3, arranged central, flat toruous, yellow with tip amber, 3-4 cm long, radial spines 1-2, short, white, aciculate, withish color with dark tip; flowers 4-5(6) cm long, ovary about one-third of total length, to 2 cm in widest portion, tubercled, areoles eliptic with white wool and yellow glochids, 3 mm long; outer tepals deltoid, yellowish with red margin, internal tepals truncated, red-orange with green tips; stamens with pink filaments to 25 mm, anthers light pink, stima cream with pink tinge, to 3.5 cm long, base bowl shaped forming a nectar chamber, 6 mm wde by 3 mm high with a 1 mm long pedicel, style 2.6 cm by 2 mm thick, lobes 9, to 3-4 mm, ovary 20 x 15 mm. Fruit purple, ovoboide, umbilicus shallow, to 3 x 2.5 cm; seeds orbicular, angulated, 3-4 mm in diameter",

"description": "The Arizona State University Vascular Plant Herbarium (ASU) is among the most important in the greater Sonoran Desert region with over 315,000 specimens. We are particularly proud of our holdings of Cactaceae which include over 1,100 chromosome counts.\r\nAn herbarium is a collection of pressed, dried, and archived plants that are systematically arranged - each specimen a physical record of a plant growing at a particular place and at a particular time. Like most herbaria, we seek to document the geographical and ecological distribution of the regional flora, facilitate research, support teaching, and promote conservation.
