The dead wood was 20cm dia, with a thin layer of rotten material but largely solid and extremely hard. The workers were entering two 5mm dia. holes in the wood. I collected workers from the surface, then brought a large section of the log back to lab for dissection. There were cylindrical tunnels just under the surface of the log, bored into solid wood. I exposed these tunnels using hammer and chisel. I first found another 15 workers dispersed in the tunnels. Then, at the end of one tunnel, I found a large elaterid larva, the maker of the tunnels. As I collected workers I dropped them live into a plastic cup. They could not climb the walls. Later I dropped the elaterid larva in the cup, and 5-10 of the workers immediately attacked it, gripping it with mandibles and attempting to sting.",
