"description": "El Golfo de California y el resto de la porción oceánica que rodea la península de Baja California son célebres a nivel mundial por su diversa fauna de mamíferos marinos, particularmente de cetáceos. Históricamente, las poblaciones de éstos últimos han sido fuertemente impactadas, aquí y en otras partes del mundo, pero en años recientes se ha ejercido un esfuerzo considerable para evaluar y manejar adecuadamente dichas poblaciones, en particular las de pequeños cetáceos. Una herramienta importante para definir las poblaciones de mamíferos es el análisis de variación geográfica desde el punto de vista morfológico, utilizando la estructura esquelética y particularmente la anatomía craneal. Estos datos constituyen la base primordial de la taxonomía de los cetáceos mismos. La Colección Osteológica de Mastozoología Marina perteneciente al Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, consta fundamentalmente de restos óseos de pequeños cetáceos, principalmente cráneos y mandíbulas, que han sido producto de colectas de diversos profesores del Área Interdisciplinaria de Ciencias del Mar de nuestra institución durante salidas de campo de carácter académico. Con la actualización y mejoramiento de esta colección de referencia científica, se pretende dar un apoyo fundamental a la investigación de especies, tan importantes para Baja California Sur y los estados vecinos, así como a especies marinas sujetas a protección, como son Megaptera novaeangliae la Ballena Jorobada, Eschrictius robustus la Ballena Gris, Tursiops truncatus la Tonina y una especie en peligro de extinción Phocoena sinus la Vaquita Marina. Además, la presente colección cuenta con ejemplares de gran relevancia nacional como Peponocephala electra, cuyo registro es el único en la república, y especies que en pocos museos mexicanos se pueden encontrar como Mesoplodon peruvianus, Berardius bairdii, Balaenoptera acutorostrata.
