Conocidos generalmente como \"gusanos redondos\", se les considera entre los organismos más abundantes y diversos del planeta. En México, los nemátodos marinos se han estudiado en la Sonda de Campeche (Castillo y Lambshead, 1991, de Jesús Navarrete, 1993). En Quintana Roo, se han realizado investigaciones en la laguna de Buenavista (de Jesús Navarrete, 1993) y la Bahía de Chetumal(de Jesús-Navarrete, en prensa). Los objetivos de este proyecto son: 1) Integrar una lista con las especies de la costa de Quintana Roo, 2) Elaborar una colección de referencia y 3) Formar recursos humanos de alto nivel. Actualmente se tienen identificadas 68 especies de nemátodos, mismos que se han integrado a las colecciones del Museo de Zoología de ECOSUR, adicionalmente se tienen 48 géneros identificados y se trabaja en la determinación a nivel específico. De los organismos colectados, el 40% son nuevas especies para la ciencia. Se ha concluido una tesis de licenciatura sobre ecología de nemátodos en la Bahía de Chetumal y una más está actualmente en proceso.
