Su acervo se originó mediante el concurso de estudiantes y profesores de la ENCB-IPN y se incrementó de manera paulatina con la donación de materiales, la participación en proyectos de investigación y contratos de servicio externo financiado por diversas instituciones. En la colección existe material de todas las entidades estatales de México y se estima que están representados el 90% de los géneros y entre el 90 y 95% de las especies representadas para el país. De su estudio se han generado casi 100 trabajos de tesis de licenciatura y posgrado y poco más de 120 artículos científicos incluyendo la descripción de 35 especies, varias claves de identificación, monografías y series de artículos.\nA la fecha cuenta con 4,834 colectas, el 80% de ellas corresponde a peces dulceacuícolas y el resto estuarinos y marinos. Los primeros han sido colectados en cuerpos de agua epicontinentales y por lo tanto corresponden a los jerarquizados como primarios, secundarios y vicarios; el número de registro de estos tres grupos asciende a 9,079 correspondientes a aproximadamente 320,000 ejemplares. De ellos 1602 registros y 59,218 especímenes se encuentran incorporados en bases de datos derivadas de los proyectos CONABIO P006, L051, y L281, además se han comprometido otros 326 registros y 2057 ejemplares en el proyecto CONABIO S115.\nEl objetivo del presente proyecto es elaborar, con el formato BIOTICA ver 3.1 una base de datos que contenga la información proveniente de 7,151 registros y un estimado de 260,000 ejemplares de peces primarios, secundarios y vicarios de México.
