O HUCS, fundado em 1983, possui em seu acervo mais de 40.000 exsicatas entre fungos, liquens e plantas oriundas da flora nordeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul e também de intercâmbios nacionais e internacionais. Neste acervo, há a coleção histórica de Jürgens & Stier – geógrafos alemães, que coletaram samambaias no início do século XX em nosso estado.
