"description": "La riqueza específica y el alto grado de endemismo de los peces son características propias de México, como lo es la tasa de extinción de especies, que suma 24 en los últimos 75 años, producto del deterioro ambiental, cuyo efecto mayor se ha producido en el Altiplano Mexicano. En la parte norte de esta área se hallan hábitats frágiles como los manantiales de las zonas semidesérticas, mientras que en la porción sur la mayor amenaza es el crecimiento poblacional y las actividades humanas derivadas. En las dos áreas las poblaciones de especies nativas han disminuido, hay desapariciones locales, reducción de la amplitud de distribución, extirpación a nivel nacional e incluso extinciones totales, pero poco se conoce sobre el número de poblaciones que componen una especie y más aún de los cambios que ocurren dentro de esas poblaciones. El número de especies que aparecen en los listados oficiales de riesgo se ha incrementado. Hoy se acepta que se ha afectado al 43% de la ictiofauna nacional, un buena parte de esta cifra corresponde al área de estudio de esta propuesta, donde, entre otros eventos, se han extinguido ocho especies. Con este panorama, en 2002 con la incorporación del responsable de esta propuesta a la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro y la creación del Laboratorio de Conservación de Peces y Hábitats Acuáticos se establece la Colección de Peces del Centro de México, con un alcance regional que incluye 12 entidades federativas de la parte central del país relacionadas con la Mesa Central y el Eje Neovolcánico. Su principal objetivo ha sido el estudio de la ictiofauna de las áreas importantes para la conservación de la diversidad de peces, por ello su acervo científico contiene información de 14 Regiones Hidrológicas Prioritarias. El material íctico depositado en ella procede de cuatro proyectos de investigación concluidos y de tres que se hallan en distintas fases de desarrollo, financiados por agencias nacionales e internacionales y en los cuales el proponente ha sido el responsable directo o en proyectos más amplios colabora como responsable de la parte de peces.Esta propuesta es importante debido a que la mayoría de los registros corresponden a muestreos realizados en los últimos ocho años, en sitios con un seguimiento continuo hasta 1998 por varios investigadores. La computarización de esta información y su posterior disponibilidad, permitirá aplicar herramientas de distinta índole que permitirán el análisis histórico de los cambios en composición y estructura de las comunidades e implementar planes de manejo y conservación, así como contribuir a la delimitación de áreas naturales protegidas.
